Roald Amundsen. Norwegian polar explorer. 1872-1928.
In 1926, Amundsen reached the North Pole with the airship "Norge". The airship left Ny-Ålesund on 11 May 1926 and passed the geographic North Pole the next day at 2.20 am and continued on to Teller in Alaska. The airship was designed and built by the Italian engineer Umberto Nobile. Nobile led the airship from Rome to Kings Bay, where Amundsen and the Norwegian part of the crew boarded, and then on to Alaska. "Norge" had a crew of 16. Sponsor Lincoln Ellsworth was on board as navigator, Swede Finn Malmgren was the expedition's meteorologist and Oskar Omdal was mechanic.
