A relative of Danny Vargas, shot dead yesterday on the outskirts of this Jewish settlement, is comforted by a Jewish Ethiopian friend, as they both cry during a funeral service outside the synagogue October 27. Vargas, a 29-year-old Jewish immigrant from Chile 18 years ago, was shot several times at close range by Palestinian gunmen on a quiet road outside Hebron, adjacent to this settlement. He is the first Jew to be killed since the signing of the Wye Plantation interim peace agreement in Washington. A Palestinian man, age 65, was found dead in the northern West Bank hours after Vargas's murder. JWH/SB
