Rāvaṇa assigns the defence of Laṅkā's eastern gate to his general Prahasta; the southern gate to his brothers MahāpārÅ›va and Mahodara; the western gate to his son Indrajit; and the northern gate, where he himself would also go, to the spies Åšuka and Sāraṇa. The centre he leaves to Virūpāká¹£a. Having thus directed Laṅkā's key defences, he retires to his chamber. Along with his allies, Rāma has now decided to climb the nearby Mount Suvela, from which there is a splendid view of the city of Laṅkā 'as if suspended in the sky'. All of Rāvaṇa's dispositions are soon known to VibhÄ«á¹£aṇa through the birds he has sent out as spies.
