Patient Care Hospital discharge summary for lung cancer patient, 1965. Front page of a Belfast City Hospital discharge summary for W G, case number 46 in Dr P C Elmes' work with McCaughey and Wade to produce the first detailed UK report of the relationship between exposure to asbestos and the lung cancer mesothelioma. The summary reports that W G died during this hospital admission, and that the diagnosis of mesothelioma was confirmed at post-mortem. It also concludes that although W G did not have a history of exposure to asbestos, the evidence of asbestosis (scarring of the lung caused by the inhalation of asbestos fibres) was indicative of contact with the material. ©SSPL/Science Museum
