Image description

Moslem volunteers wrestle with a sheep prior to it being sacrificed at a Mosque in Singapore March 28. Moslems in Singapore are celebrating the annual Moslem ritual of slaughtering sheep, goats and cows on Hari Raya Haji, commemorating the day that God asked the Prophet Abraham to sacrifice his first born son, Ishmael. Just as he was about to put his son to the knife, a ram appeared to take Ishmael's place and Abraham sacrificed the animal instead. In Singapore, Moslems pay S$270 (US$158) per sheep and get to keep the meat with the left overs going to the poor. Mosques in Singapore used to recieved orders of up to 150 sheep but due to the recession, only 57 sheep were ordered for slaugther this year. st/JIR
