MODEL MEMORIAL TO TWA FLIGHT 800 ON CRASH ANNIVERSARY, 1998-07-17 (photo)

A small model of TWA Flight 800 dedicated to the memory of the 230 people who lost their lives in the July 17 1996 crash of the Paris bound Boeing 747 over the waters off Long Island, New York, sits beneath a flag that was flying at half staff at Smith Point Park beach in Shirley, July 17, on the second anniversary of the crash. The cause of the crash of the Paris bound flight has yet to be offcially determined, however it is thought that a possible explosion in the center fuel tank of the 747 jet shortly after take off from New York's JFK Airport caused the plane to crash into the Atlantic Ocean. Smith Point Park is the closest point on land to the actual site of the crash. MS/HB
