KEEPER DEFENDS HIMSELF FROM GRIFFON VULTURE IN JERUSALEM ZOO, 1999-03-22 (photo)

Dudu Morad, a keeper at the Jerusalem Biblical Zoo, defends himself as he approaches the nest of Yehuda, an 18-year-old Griffon vulture, as he approaches cradling a 12-hour-old chick to place in Yehuda's nest March 22. The chick, named for local basketball star Kenny Williams, was hatched in an incubator as part of an international program to reintroduce the birds, which face extinction in the region, into the wild. Both Yehuda and his mate are male Griffons, the only known case of a homosexual pairing according to an expert, who successfully reared a chick under similar circumstances last year. DPS
