Image description

Venezuelan Jose Borges (R) talks about his art exhibit placed amongst the rubble of Caracas' Catia prison, dynamited in 1997 after it became known as one of the most violent prisons in Latin America. The 432 square-meter art display created by Venezuelan Jose Borges titled "It Came From The Sky", first showed in the Residenz Gallery of Salzburg, Austria in 1995. Borges then decided to move it to the remains of the Catia prison where he gave art classes to the inmates and was an avid supporter of its destruction. The demolition of the prison and the art exhibition is an attempt by the government to improve Venezuela's reputation of inhumane prison conditions where three out of four inmates have not been sentenced and there is a 500% rate of overcrowding.
