'A motorcade of police motorcyclists and security cars swept Rhodesia's Prime Minister, Mr Ian Smith, to the steps of the Commonwealth Office, off Whitehall, yesterday. It was 4pm - time for that moment of the confrontation when he was to meet the Commonwealth Secretary, Mr Arthur Bottomley, for discussions on his country's independence. A car door opened. The party stepped out. Six more security men, four of Mr Bottomley's staff, and cameramen moved in.'
