Image description

Holland America Line's new SS Amsterdam departs Port Everglades on its maiden voyage October 30,2000. Built in Italy, at a cost of $300 million, the 61,000-ton Amsterdam is the 10th ship in the Seattle-based company's fleet. Constructed for world cruising, the 780-foot-long, 105.8-foot-wide, 1,380-passenger ship is capable of achieving a cruising speed of 24.5 knots, 20 percent faster than most contemporary passenger vessels, according to company officials. Amsterdam is beginning a series of Panama Canal cruises from Fort Lauderdale to continue through the winter. AN/ME
