Guerre des Boers (Afrique du Sud, 1899-1902): The Orange River Bridge guarded by the British, South Africa', 1900 One of a boxed set of stereoscope photographs produced for sale to the general public by a professional firm of photographers, Underwood and Underwood. The Second Boer War (1899-1902) was the first war to be covered comprehensively by both film and still photography. This was the result of improved technology in both photographic equipment and printing techniques. The Orange River marked the border between the Boer Republic of Orange Free State and the British Cape Colony. On 27th February 1900, the Boers retreated across the river as the British, under Lord Roberts, advanced. Bridges such as this required guarding against potential sabotage for the remainder of the war, as the Boers harrassed the British with guerrilla tactics. ©SSPL/National Media Museum
