Globe of Mars on a wooden stand, 1880-1890. Globe of Mars on a wooden stand, made by Eugene M Antoniadi and Camille Flammarion, and presented by Antoniadi to the Royal Astronomical Society in 1890. Antoniadi was a Turkish-born astronomer, of Greek descent, who became a leading astronomer in France. This was made when Antoniadi was working at Flammarion's observatory at Juvisy in France at a time when he became the leading exponent of the theory that Mars had canals. In 1909 he was given access to the largest telescope in Europe at the Meudon Observatory when he disproved this theory. His observations of Martian topography helped lay the foundation of modern research. Diameter: 5.75 inches (150 mm). ©SSPL/Science Museum
