FORENSICS EXPERTS EXAMINE BONES FROM GUATEMALAN MASSACRE, 1999-03-02 (photo)

U.S. anthropological forensics pioneer Clyde Snow (L) examines human remains unearthed from a massacre site in northen Guatemala February 15 in Guatemala City. A whole village, estimated to number 376 people was massacred at finca San Francisco, some 460 km north of the capital on the 17 of July 1982. Only 19 of the villagers remains have been found as the bodies were incinerated by the army. Guatemala's Forensic Anthropology team, which Snow founded, is one of the organisations that is involved in trying to uncover the horrors committed during Guatemala's long guerrilla civil war. In three days time a Guatemalan commission will present a 20 month investigation into the abuses committed during the civil war, with which the country hopes clarify it's sad history. EA
