Illustrator: Sayers, James 1788 Source/Shelfmark: P3324 This print is in two parts, the top half based on the design of the entrance tickets for the public gallery of the court proceedings, the bottom part showing the layout of Westminster Hall, with Hastings in the dock. the arm representing parliament holds a whip of scorpions. Sayers' crest has the profiles of the main instigators of the impeachment proceedings, Burke, Fox and Sheridan, instead of battering rams' heads. The original motto 'Sub Libertate Quietem' (Peace under Liberty) has been changed to 'Sub Libertate Tyran' (Tyranny under Liberty). Beside the crest sit the personifications of Justice and also that of Common Law, whose head is bowed in shame. Below, Hastings is confronted in the dock by his prosecutors, on the seventh day of the trial, when the legal limits of the case were argued. Published: 1788.
