Image description

Leonor de la Rosa Bustamente, an ex-secret agent in Peru's military, plays with her 4 year old son Jorge Luis Cantera as she lies in bed in an undisclosed location in Mexico City convalescing from the effects of severe torture at the hands of her ex-comrades, March 20. Bustamente was accused in 1997 by her ex-comrades of leaking information to the press regarding widespread wire-tapping and spying on prominent journalists and opposition politicians in Peru, for which she was brutally tortured. Peruvian authorities gave her compensation and flew her to Mexico City for rehabilation in February, 1998. Bustamente has made a formal complaint to Mexico's human rights commision alleging that her medical treatment to help her recover from her torture, which has left her paralyzed, deaf and blind on one side of her body, was grossly insufficient and in fact designed to further disturb her psychologically.
