Image description

Colombian armed forces chief Gen. Fernando Tapias (L) awards a medal to soldier Gustavo Adolfo Caro who was wounded and lost his left hand 10 days ago in a "necklace bomb" attack in central Boyaca province, May 25. Attackers placed explosives packed in a tube around the neck of farmer Elvia Cortes which then exploded, killing her and a policeman and wounding three others including Carot. The military initially blamed FARC rebels for the attack but the guerrillas denied reponsibility and the governemnt has since backed down from blaming the FARC. KP/LSD
