Video description

An edited record of the demarcation of the border between Uganda and Kenya from late 1959 to March 1960. The 6-month safari along the trackless border at the foot of the scarp included camels, donkeys and porters. An administrator from each country (L.E.Whitehouse, DC Turkana for Kenya, and John Cleave from Uganda) organised the logistics and trace cutting, and surveyors from each country did the markers and triangulation. 06.00 to 06.35 - African workmen construct trig point on highland hill top under supervision of British surveyor. 06.45 to 07.02 - British surveyor takes reading with theodolite engraved UK8. 07.03 to 07.55 - Small gang of young men clear undergrowth with hatchets, supervised by young African in western clothing. 07.55 to 08.18 - Payday. The African labourers are paid in cash by British official sitting at table as labourers come forward and make their mark. The cash and account sheets are shown on the table. 08.18 to 08.29 - Long string of burdened camels on open scrub cliffs of mountain ridge. 08.29 to 09.18 - The team Land Rover attempts to cross a wadi amongst lush trees, whilst labourers improvise trackway crossing from vegetation. 09.25 to 09.49 - Two African team members stand beside a theodolite on a rocky cairn with view towards mountains. 09.55 to 10.01 - A large group of Africans dance in woodland and exit, following costumed male.
