The Swedish engineer and Arctic explorer Salomon August Andree (1854-1897) and his team attempted to cross the North Pole from Spitsbergen in their balloon 'Eagle'. They started on 11. July 1897. The participants of the expedition were missing, however, until one found remains northeast of Spitsbergen, including diaries and photographs in 1930. In 1937, this buoy was found with a message: Buoy No.2. Dropped on 12th July at 01. 30 h. We fly in 20 meters height and almost straight east over vast ice fields, which are thin and exhibit large breaches. The location is at 821 / 2 degrees north and 28 degrees east.
