Battle of the Crater, American Civil War, 30 July, 1864, during the siege of Petersburg, Virgina. Sharpshooters (marksmen). Federate troops exploded a mine in the Conderate defences. Subsequent battle fought by the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia, commanded by General Robert E. Lee and the Union Army of the Potomac, commanded by Major General George G. Meade.
