An army officer holds the umbrella on the head of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina (in white sari) as she lays wreaths at the grave of her mother in Dhaka in rains August 15. On this day in 1975, Hasina's parents, three brothers and several other close relatives were killed in an army coup. Hasina and her only sister Sheikh Rehana survived the coup as they were travelling abroad at the time. Hasina's father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, popularly called "Bangabandhu" (friend of Bangladesh), led Bangladesh (formerly East Pakistan) to independence in 1971.Hasina took over as Prime Minister following elections in June 1996, and declared August 15 a public holiday.
