When two stars get too close, cosmic drama inevitably will result. This artist’s rendering shows the future of a pair of white dwarf stars, which are the hot cores of old stars. The recently discovered stars currently circle each other once every 13 minutes at the astonishing speed of 370 miles per second – 180 times faster than the fastest jet on Earth. In just 900,000 years, the two stars will spiral together and merge, possibly exploding as a supernova. Earth is in no danger since these stars are 3,000 light-years (18,000 trillion miles) away.
