After many thousands of years of Rāma's righteous but lonely rule over the world, Death, in the form of an ascetic, visits Rāma and informs him of Brahmā's message: as Rāma has completed his mission and lived eleven thousand years as a mortal on earth, he can now proceed to the world of the gods in his role as Viṣṇu, the Preserver.
