Adolphe Pegoud (1889-1915), the daring French aeronaut, c 1913. Hand-coloured lantern slide from the World Missionary Society Slide Depot, UK, part of the RPS Collection at the National Media Museum. Photograph shows Pegoud at the controls of his monoplane, a Bleriot-built Type XI aircraft. Pegoud made the first parachute jump from a plane from the height of 250 metres on 13 August 1913, and did the first loop-the-loop on 21 September 1913. Regrettably, his skill and luck ran out during World War One on 31 August 1915 when he was killed in aerial combat over Montreux-Chateau in Alsace and was buried in Montparnasse cemetery in Paris.
