Image title
A woman with malnourished child stands in the veranda of International Center for Diarrhea Disease Research, Bangladesh (ICDDR,B) in Dhaka. Malnutrition contributes to approximately 6.5 million under five deaths worldwide every year - a proportion unmatched by any infectious disease since the Black Death. Yet it is not an infectious disease. It leaves millions of people crippled, chronically vulnerable to illness and intellectually disabled, ultimately affecting the viability of whole societies. In developing countries, each year more than 12 million (12,000,000) children under five years of age die of preventable causes, 5 million within first weeks after the birth. In Bangladesh alone 93 per cent of children are malnourished, 700,000 children die of preventable deaths, of which 2 out of 3 are related to malnutrition. Malnutrition is not just a silent emergency - It is largely an invisible one as well. Three quarters (75%) of the children who die of malnutrition-related causes are only mildly or moderately malnourished and shows no outward signs of problems to a casual observer. (photo)
