A JEW NAILS MEZUZAH BY THE DOOR OF A POLISH SYNAGOGUE, 1998-11-10 (photo)

Rabbi Haskel Besser (L) and Asher Sharf nail a silver mezuzah symbol of protection by the door of the re-dedicated synagogue in the southern Polish town of Oswiecim, near the former Nazi death camp in Auschwitz November 10. The Nazis murdered some 1.5 million people in the camp, most of them Jews, during World War Two. After the war the synagogue was seized from Jewish ownership by a communist decree. It was the first piece of Jewish property to be returned to the tiny Jewish community in Poland in April this year under a government programme of property restitution. JST/AA
