Image description

The chapel and mausoleum was begun between 1760 and 1769, and was completed in 1812. It was designed by James Paine for MP and coal owner George Bowes. The chapel has one storey over a basement, and the front elevation has three bays with an Ioinc portico with pediment. there is a two sided staircase with balustrade and central door, and the Ionic columns are repeated at the corners of the main front. Behind is a tall parapet with urn finials and balustraded outer sections. The roof has a central drum with garlands, and a lead-covered domed roof on top. The building is cruciform, with extensions on the north and south sides, which have a small open pediment over a semi-circular window. The monument was erected between 1750 and 1757 by Daniel Garrett and James Paine after 1753, and the statue of British Liberty was created by Christopher Richardson. The monument was for George Bowes and consists of an ashlar column 140ft high with an overhanging plinth with the stature carryingthe staff of Maintenance and cap of Liberty.
