Facsimile illustration from 'Cosmographia Universalis', published in Basel in 1544; together with the 'Plan de la Tapisserie' and the 'Plan de la Gouache', this is one of the earliest known maps of Paris; the city walls of both Philippe II Auguste, King of France (1180-1223) and of Charles V, King of France (1364-80) are clearly marked and this indicates a dating before 1533 when the inner Right Bank Enceinte (city wall) of Philippe Auguste began to be demolished on the orders of François Premier. The Cosmographia, first published in 1544 but with many later reprintings was the earliest German description of the world.
