They didn't expect this. Two blackmailers, a man and a woman both in their 60s, had forced a wealthy merchant from Catania to pay, on pain of death, three million lire. The sum was to be left on the altar of the city's Cathedral. At the appointed time, when there were only a few faithful in the temple and a couple of priests wandering along the aisles, the two criminals entered, who approached the altar where the envelope deposited by the merchant.
