Image description

Maori mere presented to Field Marshal Lord Roberts by Chief M. H. Tuta Nihoniho, 1901. This Maori ceremonial méré, or club, is made of nephrite jade and was presented by Chief M H Tuta Nihoniho to Field Marshal Lord Roberts in January 1901, as a token of admiration for his exploits in South Africa. It had been passed down from chief to chief in the tribe for 18 generations and was sufficiently revered to have its own name - ‘Porourangi.’
