Image description

PHOTO TAKEN 12MAY01, Lena Sandlin, owner of Ellis Farms, sleeps with her new born foal as she waits to see if he will recover from a mild case of a mysterious illness that scientists now call "mare reproductive loss syndrome" at the Hagyard-Davidson-McGee Associates Medical hospital in Lexington, Kentucky, in this photo taken May 12, 2001. With the help of an oxygen tub and doctors, the foal was able to stand eight hours after his birth with little signs of the mysterious illness. Throughout Central Kentucky farms more than 500 foals have died from this illness that experts believed to be caused by toxins from molds growing on pasture grasses which has causes spontaneous abortions and stillbirths in mares whose pregnancies are coming to term.
