Timbuktu, Mali, founded between the 11th and 12th centuries, is famous for its mausoleums of Muslim saints and thousands of Afro-Muslim manuscripts, some of which date back to the twelfth century, and others from the pre-Islamic era. These texts talk about Islam, but also about history, astronomy, music, botany, genealogy, anatomy... Since 2012, the Islamist jihadists of AQIM have been autodafing ancient manuscripts, while scholars and volunteers have clandestinely evacuated 160,000 to 300,000 manuscripts to the capital Bamako to protect them.
