Journal of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia, 2nd. Series, Vol. 3, Pl. 8. These prints appeared in the 2nd series of the Jour. Of the Acad. Of Nat. Sci. of Phila. In the bound volumes, they were hand-colored. (A.E. Phillips, Academy Editor) John Cassin (1813-1869) was an outstanding American ornithologist, head of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia's bird department and associated with the J.T. Bowen lithographic establishment. These are his taxonomic names. Images of a male and female Red-backed Mannikin (Spermestes nigriceps) and a Dusky Mannikin (Spermestes fuscans).
