Image description

The reconciliation of King George III and his estranged son, the Prince of Wales. The text at the bottom of the print references the parable of the Prodigal Son. The Prince and the King's relationship was publicly dysfunctional. George III disapproved of the Prince's profligate lifestyle, and the Prince resented his father's refusal to introduce him to the responsibilities of Kingship. Gillray's print displays a moving embrace, though in reality the meeting between father and son was cold and stilted.
