Image description: Mauser bullet extracted from the leg of Private T Hewitt, Loyal North Lancashire Regiment, in Mesopotamia, in 1916. On 5 April 1916, during fighting at Umm-el-Hannah in Mesopotamia, Private Thomas Hewitt of the 6th Battalion Loyal North Lancashire Regiment was shot in the leg with this bullet from a Mauser rifle. Although he survived the campaign Private Hewitt is recorded by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission as having died of wounds on 22 October 1918. His grave is in Tonge Cemetery in Bolton, Lancashire.
