A goat was recorded as the symbol of Istria as early as the times of the ancient Romans; the Istrian coat of arms consists of a shield on a blue field with a yellow (gold) goat facing left with red hoofs and horns; the arms depicted were those used for the Margravate of Istria, part of the Habsburg Littoral Crown lands from 1814 until 1918; The County of Istria (now Croatia), was founded in 1062 as an independent state; In 1250 it was acquired by the patriarchs of Aquileja, in the late 13th century it became part of the State of Venice. In 1814 Istria was acquired by Austria-Hungary; the arms are identical to the arms used for Istria by the Doges of Venice in the 13th century.
