The demolition of the old Grammar School, Douglas, Isle of Man, 1932-34 (b/w photo)

On the back of this photograph John James Frowde writes, "Mid-Winter - sun low - note shadow of chimney, Durie House, R centre. Again the demolition of the old Grammar School, revealing for the first time Durie's House, 6 Durie's Lane, partly seen 'dead on'. For over 150 years this old mansion has stood in a narrow lane not more than four yards wide: and till now, since photography, became possible, there was never a photograph taken of this old building other than in profile from either end of the lane." Additional notes: "See back of folder for earliest Deed re conveyance of 'Dickson's house and garden' (site of the old Grammar School) to Bishop Wilson (et alu) in 1714." : "Extract from Deed from William Dickson to Bishop Wilson dated 9 April 1714. 'To all Christian people to whom these presents may come: Know ye that I, Wm Dickson, of the city of Dublin, Alderman, at the instance of the Right Rev Father in God, Thomas, Lord Bishop of Sodor and Mann, do, out of the good inclination I have to promote any charitable and public good within the Isle of Man, and especially in the town of Douglas, the place of my nativity, have given unto the said Rt Rev Thomas, Lord Bishop of Sodor and Mann and to such undertakers or trustees as his Lordship and I shall hereafter nominate and appoint, a certain dwelling house and garden situate, lying, and being in the town of Douglas aforesaid, commonly called Dickson's house, of the yearly chief or Lord's rent of fourteen pence with all ways (&) for the convenience of a School-house, to be called Dickson's School-house, and an apartment for a School-master, to be buiilt and erected there.'
