Image title
Mona's Isle landing her passengers in the Bay, Douglas, Isle of Man, 1932-34 (b/w photo)
On the back of this photograph John James Frowde writes, "An enlargement from a small section of a photo of the 1843(c) painting of the Mona's Isle (I) landing her passengers in the bay by means of the large ferry boats used for the purpose at that time. This section comes out much larger than the same area in the painting, and suffers in sharpness thereby. Still it is easy to distinguish the old Courthouse, on the Red Pier, the watchhouse (still there), the Finch Road villas, the old tower of the House of Industry, and the men on the bench by the jetty, on left, hauling in a net with hopes of finding grey mullet in it, probably. But the reasons for inclusion of this in this series, are the picture of the old Fort rampart R foreground, and just at the rear of it, the smoke from Winram's shipyards, with the bows (sterns more likely) of two vessels on the stocks therein." Additional notes: "Next print gives a rear view of the ferry boats above referred to.": "In this view, the passengers are being landed on the low slippery platform that half-circled the end of the Red Pier, until it was demolished, at the seaward end."
