The Perdicaris Incident, Morocco. Ion Perdicaris a Greek-American playboy, and Cromwell Vardy, the son of Perdicaris' lover Ellen Varley, were kidnapped on 18 May 1904 by the Moroccan bandit chief Mulai Ahmed er Raisuli. Raisuli demanded a ransom of ,000 and control of two of Morocco's wealthiest districts from the Sultan of Morocco. US President Theodore Roosevelt ordered American warships and marines to be sent to Morocco before the Sultan agreed to the ransom demands and the men were freed.
