James Thornhill

English architect, 1675-1734

Possibly born in Woolland. Thornhill is considered one of the most important English exponents of Baroque decorative painting. He specialized in large-scale, illusionistic wall and ceiling paintings, although he occasionally worked in other genres as various as portraiture, illustration, and ceramic decoration. He was the first English-born artist to be knighted.
