Guido Mazzoni defined the genre of ulta-realism in early Renaissance sculpture. Documented as a painter, goldsmith, mask maker and festival director, Mazzoni's diverse artistic talents facilitated his genius for creating dramatically activated terracotta ensembles of mourning figures and official portraits. His penetrating and authentic depictions serve to evoke the illusion of shared emotion between sculpture and viewer. Mazzoni and his legacy left an indelible mark on modern Italian, French and English sculpture.
