Although earlier scholars suggested a birthdate of 1565-1570, Cerano's birthdate of ca. 1575 is based on documents stating his age in a census of 1610 and at time of death in 1632. His first securely date painting is from 1594 in Cerano. Based on his adopted nickname, his birthplace was probably Cerano, although he may have been born in Milan or Busto Arsizio.
