Ferrer Bassa

Spanish miniaturist painter, -1350

Ferrer's workshop was in Calle Cucurulla in Barcelona. Most of his commissions came from royal patrons and were typically for altarpieces although he also did illumination work. The well-preserved murals in the S. Miguel Chapel at the Pedralbes Monastery are the most well-known surviving works of the Bassa workshop; these murals are notably influenced by contemporary Sienese and Florentine painting. The sources of this Italian influence are debated but Ferrer may have travelled to Italy.
