Image description: Æthelred and Æthelflæd, rulers of Mercia grant ten hides (cassatae) at Stanton Long and three hides (manentes) at Caughley in Barrow, Shropshire, to the community of the church of Much Wenlock, in exchange for three hides (manentes) at Easthope and five at Patton, Shropshire. They also grant a gold chalice weighing 30 mancuses in honour of Abbess Mildburg; dated 901, Shrewsbury (Sawyer, no. 221).Upper portion of a chirograph, with ‘… ME CRVCIS +’ written along the lower edge (perhaps for ‘SIGNVM ALME CRVCIS’).Endorsed in a contemporary hand, ‘east hop.’; and in a 14th-century hand, ‘donum effredi \regis/ de esthop scilicet stowell.
