Image description

Which is the largest church? St Peter's, Rome, the chief church of Roman Catholic Christendom, wherein the Popes are crowned. According to widespread tradition, the martyrdom of St Peter took place in AD 67, and in AD 64 and 65 the "great multitude" of Christians were put to death by Nero for having caused the burning of Rome. The Emperor Constantine I gave freedom to the Church in 313, and the present structure was commenced in the middle of the 15th century. Building extended over 150 years, and Michelangelo, who was one of the architects, designed the dome and lantern. St Peter's is 669 ft long, and 442 ft at its widest point. Illustration for one of a set of 50 "Do You Know?" cigarette cards issued by Carreras in 1939.
