Advert for Isaac Walton & Co, tailors & general outfitters, 1889 (engraving)

This is an advertisement for Isaac Walton's clothing store. Tailors and clothiers like ‘Isaac Walton’ sold formal as well as more everyday garments like jackets and coats. There were 3 popular styles of coat in the 19th century; the dress coat was cut across the waistline with tails that hung down at the back, by the end of the century it was a formal piece of clothing. The morning coat originated as a riding coat (worn in the morning) and as a result it’s front edges curved down rather than hanging down straight. The frock coat emerged after 1815, it was long to the knee and although similar to an over coat was fitted to the body.
