'A' pit at Backworth, near Shiremoor, North Tyneside, opened in 1818; It was the first of 8 pits at Backworth; The winding gear to move miners and bring coal up from the pit can be seen in the centre of the picture; Beside it is the winding-gear engine house with its tall, smoking chimney; The coal wagons at the front of the picture are being hauled on a rope using a stationary engine. This system was used from 1823-67; The picture is thought to have been painted for a stable keeper at the colliery;
