A view of the British and Egyptian flags being raised over the governor's palace in Khartoum where General Charles George Gordon (1833-1885) had been killed 13 years before during the Siege of Khartoum; An expedition led by Horatio Kitchener (1850-1916) was sent to reconqueror Sudan and avenge Gordon's death; The Mahdist army was defeated at the Battle of Omdurman on September 2 1898 and two days later this memorial service was held; The inscription "God Save the Queen" accompanied this photograph which is found in an album of photographs created by Francis Gregson, a wealthy civilian who accompanied Kitchener's expedition;
