Gordon Richards. Champion Jockey, 1925/27/28/29/31/32/33/34/35. In 1930 he was second in list of winning jockeys, being beaten by one by Fred Fox. His record season was 1933, when he rode 259 winners, beating by 13 the previous record made by Fred Archer in 1885. Another feature of his 1933 success was the riding of 12 consecutive winners. Gordon Richards was born in Shropshire in May 1904, and was apprenticed to M Hartigan in 1919. He rode his first winner on 21 March 1921. Although he has been Champion Jockey for so many years, he has still to ride the winner of the Derby. Illustration for Photocard issued by Ardath Tobacco in c.1936.
