Image description

Apprentices' Band, RAF, Halton. A large number of Aircraft Apprentices of the Royal Air Force receive a three years' course of instruction in fitting, general aircraft engineering and maintenance, at No 1 School of Technical Training, Halton, Buckinghamshire. By the end of this course they are fully capable of carrying out the important duties performed by aircraftmen. There are two other training schools for Aircraft Apprentices, one at Cosford, Staffordshire, where apprentices are trained either as fitters or ritters (armourer) and the other at Cranwell, Lincolnshire, where the trades taught are wireless operator mechanic and instrument maker. Illustrated is the Apprentices' Band at No 1 School of Technical Training, Halton, headed by the Drum-Major. Illustration for one of a set of 50 cigarette cards on the subject of Interesting Customs and Traditions of the Navy, Army and Airforce issued by Lambert & Butler in 1939.
