Photographer: Elliot and Fry Lieutenant General Sir William R Birdwood, GCMG, KCB, KCSI, DSO (1865-1951) From 'The War Illustrated', c1915 Birdwood was a British Army Officer who saw active service in the Second Boer War and in the First World War as Commander of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps during the Gallipoli Campaign in 1915. He later became commander-in-chief of the Fifth Army on the Western Front during the closing stages of the war. In retirement, Birdwood lived in a grace-and-favour apartment at Hampton Court Palace where he died on 17 May
